MAY CHAPTER PROGRAM:
HOW’S LEEDWORKING OUT?
What’s been your experience with the U
S Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (USGBC, LEED) green building rating system?
Whether you're an architect, engineer, specifier, product
manufacturer, contractor, subcontractor, or material supplier,
you're probably dealing with green building issues. If not,
get ready, because the green building trend will affect us
all
soon.
By now, the environmental idealism of LEED has given way to
the cold reality of having to make adjustments in the
way we put together construction documents, and the way projects
get bid and built.
- The addition of green design parameters makes for a more
complex design process, i.e. more work and product research
for architects, engineers, and specifiers.
- Specifications need to include LEED criteria, as well
as to specify the required LEED documentation submittals.
- AE's and Contractors have to deal with two sets of submittals,
adding to the work of construction administration.
- The documentation requirements of LEED will add to Contractors’
administrative costs.
- The addition of some LEED criteria will limit Contractors'
traditional latitude in selecting subs and suppliers.
- Product literature and manufacturer's websites will have
to be expanded to indicate how products meet relevant
LEED criteria, especially for recycled content and manufacturing
distance from the jobsite. And manufacturers will
have to get used to providing that information in a form
acceptable to USGBC.
The May Northern Illinois CSI Chapter program will be a panel
discussion of these issues and more.
We’ve assembled a panel representing all parts of the
AEC industry to talk about how LEED is working.
So bring your questions, issues, gripes, observations and
suggestions to the May chapter meeting and program.
With your active participation, we'll all be able to get a
better sense of both the pitfalls and the
opportunities presented to us by LEED.
